World Heart Day 2013

In celebration of National Heart Week/World Heart Day (NHW/WHD), Heart Fair 2013 is organised by the Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF) with the aim of promoting heart health in the community and also to equip the public with skills and tools to fight against heart disease. After all, heart disease and stroke combined is the world's number one killer, claiming 17.3 million lives every year.

Grassroots Adviser Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence and MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, graced the Official Launch of NHW/WHD at 5pm on 28th September 2013 at the Toa Payoh HDB Hub Mall. 

This year’s theme "Take the Road to a Healthy Heart" seeks to address the importance of a life course approach to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease, with a focus on women and children - because women are the major influencers of families, and healthy children tend to grow up to become healthy adults and form healthy families and communities.

From 10am to 8pm on 28 and 29 September, Heart Fair 2013 was packed with fun-filled and educational activities lined up by the Singapore Heart Foundation!   

 

Exhibition Corner  

There was an exhibition corner featuring 20 exhibitors from the food and healthcare industries presenting numerous health-related products and equipment to the public. At the SHF booth this year, an atrial fibrillation (AF) screening was conducted to educate the public on its risks as well as the importance of early detection. In total, about 782 individuals were screened.   

 

Health Screening     

For the second consecutive year, SHF collaborated with Mount Alvernia Hospital to conduct a Cardiac Risk Assessment for pre-registered participants at the fair. At an affordable charge of $4, each participant was entitled to a series of screenings which included measurement of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure check, cholesterols & blood glucose test, smokerlyser test and obstructive sleep apnea screening. This year, a total of about 500 participants were screened. In addition, Guardian Health & Beauty also provided complimentary basic health screenings for 652 participants. The complimentary health screenings included measurement of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure check, smokerlyser test and obstructive sleep apnea screening.

 

Nutrition Booth       

In order to educate the public about nutrition in a fun and engaging manner, participants played interactive games/quizzes in both English and Mandarin:

o   The Sandwich Game  NEW!
The task was to create healthy sandwiches from a selection of ingredients for any one of six customers, to meet their individual dietary goals, in one minute. Those who succeeded in making a sandwich that met the specific dietary goals, proceeded to spin a wheel to win attractive prizes.

o   The Heart Disease & High Blood Pressure Smarts Quizzes
Six multiple-choice questions had to be answered in one minute, after which a score was given. Those who scored four or more correct answers, proceeded to spin a wheel to win attractive prizes.

 

All participants were given a Gardenia whole-meal hamburger bun, as well as a stamp on a goodie bag redemption card for their attempts. There were an estimated total of 1,600 visits throughout the two days.

 

Sandwich Making Competition    

With the aim of encouraging the public to eat healthily, SHF held a sandwich making competition, attracting more than 20 teams. In pairs, the participants were given 30 minutes to create the most appealing, sumptuous and healthy sandwich, with the spread of ingredients provided. The participants had lots of fun and also showcased their talents, creativity and nutrition savviness.

The top three winning teams went home with prizes sponsored by Philips Electronics (S) Pte Ltd – an  Airfyer (1st Prize), an Induction Cooker (2nd Prize) and a Hand-held Blender (3rd Prize), while the rest walked away with consolation prizes (a bottle of Naturel Extra Virgin Olive Oil and a packet of Naturel Organic Brown Rice sponsored by Lam Soon Singapore Pte Ltd).

Chef Sakthi from AllSpice Institute, together with SHF’s nutritionist Lauren Ho, were the judges of the competition. We would like to thank AllSpice Institute and all participants, for their support and help in making this competition a great success!

 

Largest Singapore Map Made Of Acrylic Hearts    

As part of the Foundation’s efforts to promote heart health, a total of 1,136 pledges were received from members of the public as well as staff from the healthcare sector in two months. Their pledges, represented by little heart-shaped acrylic pieces, were placed together to form a Singapore map, signifying aspirations for a heart healthy nation. Measuring 10m², this unique Singapore map display was entered into the Singapore Book of Records for the “Largest Singapore Map Made Of Acrylic Hearts”!  The funds raised from the pledges will go towards SHF’s life-saving programmes and help provide financial assistance to needy heart patients.

 

Edwards Lifesciences Heart Exercise and Walk

Just before the launch of National Heart Week/World Heart Day, SHF along with Edwards Lifesciences organised an exercise and walk session at the Toa Payoh Town Park for all their staff. The session not only encouraged participants to kick-start a healthy lifestyle, but was also a great bonding opportunity for the management, staff and families and served as a getaway from their hectic work schedule! The event saw a crowd of about 200 people congregating at the park, dancing to the tune of Korean pop songs before starting the short walk to the Heart Fair.

 

Heart4Life Mobile Application

Together with the students from ITE College East, SHF’s mobile application “Heart4Life” has now been enhanced to feature the CPR video in Mandarin, and nearby Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can also be found based on one’s current location (for iPhones). So hurry and download the app now, as you’ll never know when you could save a life!
