Singapore Heart Foundation marked the annual NLSD on 17 Jan 2021 with a webinar held over Zoom where 204 CPR+AED instructors from 40 training centres were in attendance. We were honoured to have Dr Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Health as the Guest of Honour.
The 50-min webinar included a presentation on the latest OHCA data by Prof Marcus Ong from the Unit for Prehospital Emergency Care; a presentation on CPR+AED during the COVID-19 pandemic by Dr Mak Koon Hou; and a panel discussion by Ms Jenny Chew, Senior Lecturer at Nanyang Polytechnic School of Health and Social Sciences; Dr Cheah Si Oon, Specialist Emergency Physician; and Senior Counsel Ms Kuah Boon Theng to address the public’s fear of performing CPR+AED on female casualties.
At the event, SHF introduced the newly developed female CPR manikin vest, which fits any CPR manikin to give it a more feminine physique. It aims to help CPR+AED learners better understand and practice chest compressions around the female breasts and paste the AED pads with minimal chest exposure. Accredited training centres that attended the webinar received one vest each as a token of appreciation. SHF will also be using the vest as a training aid in our CPR+AED training programmes.
CPR is an aerosol-generating procedure. The proximity between rescuer and victim during chest compression poses a challenge in times of COVID-19. To learn more on how to minimise the risks of performing CPR during the pandemic, watch the presentation by Dr Mak Koon Hou.
