On International Women’s Day, the Singapore Heart Foundation organised the inaugural ladies’ golf and dinner at Tanah Merah Country Club (Garden course), in conjunction with the Go Red for Women campaign.
The event, Celebrating Women’s Hearts 2023, brought together 36 women golfers and 104 guests for one good cause – promoting awareness of women’s heart health. With the generous support of sponsors and donors, the event raised an estimated $107,808.88.
The golfers enjoyed the fresh breeze while having a swinging good time. Of the nine teams, one emerged victorious from the tournament and won a golf-themed music box each.
In the evening, Guest of Honour, Mrs Goh Chok Tong, along with 104 guests decked out in their best red clothes and joined in the celebration.
In her opening speech, Dr Chan Wan Xian, Chairperson of the Go Red for Women campaign, reiterated the need for women to pay attention and make lifestyle changes to prevent heart disease, and shared tips on how to begin the journey towards better heart health. “While Singaporean females have had longer life expectancies, they have spent sizeable portions of that extra time coping with poor health.” Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is commonly perceived as a man’s disease, however, it has been the leading cause of death among women for the past 2 decades, accounting for one in three deaths each year. Yet less than 10% of women are aware of the impact CVD has in women.
“I encourage you to begin caring for your hearts and make your heart health a priority, as you would for your family and loved ones. We applaud you for showing up as a daughter, wife, caregiver, or mother on every occasion, but it is time to show up for yourself. When you are aware of the causes and effects of CVD and choose to eat well and exercise regularly, you may gain many more healthy years to enjoy.”
The programme also included a fashion show, which featured red dresses sponsored by Saturday Club.
A big thank you to the sponsors and donors who made Celebrating Women’s Hearts 2023 possible. The funds raised will provide financial assistance to our beneficiaries and support our heart health awareness programmes, which will not only educate more women but also protect the hearts of our future generation.
