The Singapore Heart Foundation welcomed 40 parents and caregivers, and some tottering infants on 13 May for a morning of educational sharing on safe weaning. As children under the age of five are prone to accidental choking due to their tendency to put objects in their mouths, participants learned how to respond to emergencies that can occur when their little ones are playing or when starting solid foods.
Dr Ng Jing Jing, paediatric dentist from Petite Smiles Children’s Dental Clinic, discussed oral health in children; Ms Jocelyn Tan, senior speech therapist from National University Health System, shared best practices for baby-led weaning; and finally, Dr Magdalena Koh, associate consultant with the Child Development Unit, Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children’s Medical Institute, stressed on the importance of food and toy safety before leading a practical session on choking relief and CPR for infants and children with the support of SHF’s instructors.
