Newer Devices in Cardiac Arrest Management

At the National Life Saving Day 2020 Symposium, Prof V. Anantharaman from the Singapore General Hospital introduced two new categories of devices in cardiac arrest management:

  • Impedance Threshold Device (ITD)

The 2-handed technique in the initial use of the ITD with a face mask to maintain a continuously tight seal during compressions and ventilations.
  • Mechanical CPR

There are many kinds of mechanical CPR devices, which include the AutoPulse device, LUCAS 3 Device and the Easy Pulse.
    • Advantages
      • improve the quality of chest compressions
      • apply compression more consistently
      • provide high-quality compressions in a moving ambulance
      • allow less EMS staff to do CPR
    • Disadvantages
      • Heavy
      • Bulky
      • Expensive
      • Takes time to apply if not well trained
