According to data published by The BMJ in October last year, pregnancy complications such as miscarriage, pre-eclampsia (increased protein in urine), gestational diabetes mellitus (diabetes in pregnancy) and pre-term delivery are linked to a heightened risk of heart disease later in life.
The researchers found that several factors, including pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, pre-term birth and early menopause, were associated with up to twofold risk of a cardiovascular outcome. In addition, pre-eclampsia was also associated with a fourfold risk of heart failure.
