A new and dangerous trend is putting the hearts and lives of our youths at a serious risk.
KPods are drug-laced vape pods that look just like regular flavoured vapes. Vapes, evaporisers, ecigarettes, epipes, ecigars, and other similar devices are strictly illegal under the Tobacco Control of Advertisements and Sale Act (TCASA). Kpods are sold illegally through platforms like Telegram and are often disguised in fruity flavours and sleek packaging, making them dangerously appealing to youths. Beneath the attractive appearance, however, is a mix of dangerous substances that can damage the heart and even cause sudden death.
We sat down with Prof Tan Huay Cheem, Chairman of the Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF), about the growing threat of KPods that are putting our young lives in danger.
What Are KPods?
KPods are vape cartridges filled with synthetic drugs such as cannabinoids, ketamine, methamphetamine, and medical sedatives. These substances are mixed in unpredictable combinations, which means users never really know what they are inhaling.
While regular vapes contain nicotine, a harmful but known substance, KPods go a step further. Their drug content can cause hallucinations, seizures, memory loss, and severe heart problems. This is known as synthetic polydrug abuse, and it puts enormous stress on the body, especially the brain and heart.
How Do KPods Harm the Heart?
Many of the drugs found in KPods can damage the cardiovascular system.
Ketamine and etomidate, both medical anaesthetics, can increase heart rate and blood pressure, cause memory loss, and lead to breathing difficulties. Methamphetamine, a powerful stimulant, can lead to heart failure, stroke, and serious mental health issues. Synthetic cannabinoids overstimulate the nervous system. They can cause heart palpitations, chest pain, high blood pressure, and abnormal heart rhythms. In some cases, they can even trigger heart attacks or sudden cardiac death.
Over time, repeated use of KPods may lead to scarring of the heart muscle, long-term irregular heart rhythms, early onset heart disease, and an increased risk of heart attacks.
The real danger lies in the fact that no two KPods are the same. Even if they look identical, the ingredients can vary widely. That makes every use a risk.
Beyond the Heart: Mental and Physical Damage
The effects of KPods extend beyond heart health. These drug-laced vapes can harm multiple organs and systems in the body.
Mentally, they can cause anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, memory problems, and psychosis. In the long term, they have been linked to depression, suicidal thoughts, and increased risk of schizophrenia.
Physically, KPods can cause serious lung problems including persistent cough, breathing difficulties, and lung injury. They may also damage the kidneys, affect digestion, and cause tremors, seizures, and in extreme cases, coma.
The long-term impact of KPod use can be severe and, in some cases, irreversible.
What Should Parents and Educators Watch For
KPod use can be hard to detect, but there are some warning signs to look out for.
Mental and psychological changes may include anxiety, mood swings, paranoia, hallucinations, and social withdrawal.
Behavioural changes might include secrecy, a sudden drop in school performance, lack of motivation, or unexplained absences during lessons.
Physical signs can include bloodshot eyes, persistent cough, unusual or strong odours, shakiness, fatigue, or frequent vomiting.
Being aware of these symptoms can help adults intervene early and protect young individuals from further harm.
A Message to Our Youth: Know the Truth About KPods
KPods are more harmful than vape. They often contain drugs that are used for medical sedation or have a high potential for addiction and overdose.
Every use of a KPod is a gamble. What may seem like a harmless puff could lead to serious health consequences or even death.
If you are a youth and feeling pressured or curious, speak with your teacher, a school counsellor, your parents, or a trusted adult for advice.
Say NO to KPods. Your heart is worth better.
