Understanding The Truth About Nutrition

Healthy eating matters at every stage of life. Common nutrition myths can be misleading and lead to poor nutrition. Knowing the facts empowers you to make better choices for heart health, gain muscle strength and sustain energy.

I am old, so I do not need to eat much.
Age does not mean eating less. It means eating smart. The body’s need for nutrients stays the same or may even increase. Skipping meals or undereating can cause muscle loss, reduced immunity and slower recovery from illness or surgery. Balanced meals with protein, wholegrain, fruit and vegetables are essential for older adults to maintain their
strength and health.

People go to nutrition counselling to lose weight.
There is a common misconception that nutrition counselling is only for losing weight.
For older adults, the opposite is often true. They are more at risk of malnutrition than obesity. Poor nutrition can weaken the heart and affect overall health. With counselling, some seniors gain weight by learning to eat the right foods. Better nutrition supports heart function, muscle strength and daily vitality.

I should eat lots of fruit because they are healthy.
Fruits are healthy, but eating only one type is not enough. The same goes for vegetables. Variety matters more than quantity. Different colours provide different nutrients. Each
colour plays a unique role in protecting your heart.

Red – Tomatoes, strawberries, red peppers. Packed with antioxidants
that protect blood vessels.
Yellow and Orange – Carrots, papaya, pumpkin. Rich in vitamins that lower cholesterol and reduce inflammation.
Purple – Grapes, berries, eggplant. Contain compounds that improve blood flow and support healthy arteries.
Green – Spinach, broccoli, kale. Full of nutrients that strengthen the heart, improve circulation and support overall health.

Eating a variety of colours every day keeps your heart strong, your blood flowing
well and your body balanced.
