Married Heart Patients More Likely Than Singles to Survive

A recent US study suggests that married heart patients have better long-term survival odds, as compared to divorced, widowed and single counterparts, who were up to 71% more likely to die.

Those with spouses tended to have a greater purpose in life, fewer risk factors and were more likely to be responsible for their health through diet, exercise and medication adherence. However, compliance starts to slip when a significant other is gone.

In separation and widowed cases, the emotional, financial stress and psychological behaviour thereafter may play a role in adverse outcomes.

In conclusion, all heart patients are encouraged to find a sense of purpose, whether it be engaging in a new interest or getting more involved with the family because the role of relationships and friendships can help in managing coronary artery disease.
