Are we guilty of sugarcoating? The Health Promotion Board, Singapore has debunked 4 common myths about sugar:
- Brown sugar seems to be a healthier option as it contains additional minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron. However, these minerals are minuscule and brown sugar actually contains the same amount of calories as refined white sugar.
- Honey is a natural source of sweetener that has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. However, honey is still sugar and has a similar calorie content as plain sugar.
- Though a glass of fruit juice has more nutrients than a can of soda, it may still contain a substantial amount of sugar. Thus, consume no more than 1 glass of fruit juice per day.
- It is always better to eat fresh fruits to take in the vitamins, minerals and fibre, instead of juicing them.
Aim to fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables at every meal and remember to watch your sugar intake.
