On 23 Jan 2024, a new chapter unfolded for the Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF) as Mr Geoffrey Ong assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer (Designate). This marked his maiden voyage into the non-profit sector, and he is empowered with a rich history of nearly two decades in the Finance & Banking sector. His expertise spanned Finance & Planning, Governance, Controls, and Transformation, offering a unique blend of skills to the world of heart health advocacy.
Geoffrey’s journey wasn’t merely a professional one; his passion for community service had led him to volunteer in the social service sector for over a decade. His commitment shone particularly bright during his tenure with MINDS, where he served as Chairman (since Jul 2024). His previous roles with MINDS include Board Vice-Chairman (2019-2023), Chairman of the School Management Committee (2019-2023) and Board Director of Finance (2023-2024).
Reflecting on his experiences, Geoffrey noted, “My previous job roles have given me experience and knowledge across various functions in mid and large-size corporations. Coupled with my experience in Movement for the Intellectual Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), I believe my commitment puts me in good stead to lead the Singapore Heart Foundation.”
His motivation is profoundly personal. Close friends who suffered from cardiovascular issues fuelled his passion for promoting cardiovascular wellness among the public. “I have friends and ex-colleagues who fell victim to cardiovascular disease,” Geoffrey shared.
“Promoting heart health and preventing related deaths is something that resonates intensely with me.”
The current challenges that confront the population of Singapore — a sedentary lifestyle, inadequate knowledge of preventive measures, and increased stress levels due to the ongoing impact of COVID—have not deterred Geoffrey. Instead, they have fired his determination to find innovative solutions.
“I hope to work with the SHF team to raise awareness and further the prevention of cardiovascular disease. This is to save more lives and improve the quality of life for heart patients,” he asserted.
His vision for the SHF is ambitious yet focused: to make SHF the “go-to” organisation for all matters related to cardiovascular disease and heart wellness. Geoffrey has outlined his strategy, emphasising community engagement, corporate partnerships, policy advocacy, and heightened public awareness. He acknowledges technology as a crucial enabler in achieving these goals.
“For a start, I think we need to be agile and adopt a dynamic approach that leverages technology enabled healthcare solutions and collaborates with other healthcare organisations, including regulatory authorities,” Geoffrey explained.
Transparency and open communication are the pillars on which Geoffrey intends to build the future of SHF. He believes that fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment, infused with innovation and empowerment, is essential to advancing the Foundation’s vision and mission.
With Geoffrey Ong at the helm, the Singapore Heart Foundation heartily embarks on a journey towards a healthier future—one heartbeat at a time.
