In celebration of May Blood Pressure Measurement Month (MMM) this year, the Down with Hypertension 2024 event was held on 25 May 2024 at Bishan Community Club with Mr Chong Kee Hiong, Advisor to Bishan–Toa Payoh GROs, as Guest of Honour.

Over 500 participants joined in on all talks and activities. They took part in Piloxing and heart health booths, enjoyed complimentary BP screening, and gained knowledge of hypertension from experts, Dr Low Lip Ping, Chairman Emeritus, Singapore Heart Foundation; Associate Prof Doreen Tan, Cardiology Specialist Pharmacist, National University Heart Centre, Singapore; Natalie Yeo, Senior Dietitian, Singapore Heart Foundation; and Rachel Stephens, Senior Physiotherapist, Singapore Heart Foundation

They also learned how to use herbs and spices to enhance the flavour of food and reduce the reliance on salt for flavour at a live cooking demonstration by Yoripe chefs.

About May Blood Pressure Measurement Month

May Measurement Month is a global blood pressure screening awareness campaign, launched in 2017 by the International Society of Hypertension.

Its aim is to highlight the importance of measuring your blood pressure (BP) and to raise awareness of the dangers posed by elevated BP and hypertension.

Raised BP, or hypertension, is the single biggest risk factor responsible for mortality worldwide. In Singapore alone, over one in three Singaporeans between age 18 to 74 years has hypertension, putting them at risk of some serious long-term complications if left untreated. As the condition has no noticeable symptoms, blood pressure measurement is the only accurate way of identifying hypertension, and therefore of critical importance.
