Go Red for World Heart Day

Know Your BP Numbers

Hypertension is becoming increasingly prevalent in Singapore, with over one-third of the population aged 18 to 74 now affected. To address this growing concern, several key initiatives are being launched. National Heart Week/World Heart Day 2024 will feature the Limbang-SHF Health Carnival on 28 Sep 2024. Themed “Know Your Numbers,” this event near Yew Tee MRT and nearby venues will focus on raising awareness about heart health, click here for more details on the full programme.

In collaboration with Terumo Asia Holdings, the BP Awareness Kiosk V2 will be introduced. These upgraded kiosks, located at community clubs, schools, and workplaces, provide convenient access to blood pressure monitoring. They also feature interactive quizzes, personalised health advice, and BP readings with actionable follow-up steps. Additionally, the Health@Station Kiosk initiative placed BP and BMI monitoring machines at Tanjong Pagar and Promenade MRT stations, making health checks more accessible for daily commuters.

Reduce Your Sodium Intake

Excessive sodium intake is a significant risk factor for hypertension, and our initiatives aim to educate the public on reducing sodium in their diets. The Community BP Initiative will expand efforts to include a Salt Taste Threshold Test, helping individuals understand how their sodium intake impacts their blood pressure. Collaboration with Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) follows research indicating high sodium intake among students, prompting us to expand hypertension education across various courses. Additionally, the Sodium Reduction Initiative will introduce the Salt Taste Threshold Test at Heart Wellness Centres, enabling individuals to better manage their sodium consumption and improve their heart health.

Social Media Engagement

We are also leveraging social media to engage the public in heart health awareness. The Heart Facts Contest, running from 26 Aug to 13 Sep, invites participants to share interesting heart health facts online for a chance to win exciting prizes. This contest aims to educate the public, increase engagement, and promote proactive steps toward better heart health.

On 29 Sep, Singapore’s landmarks will light up in red as part of Go Red for World Heart Day, raising awareness about cardiovascular health. A social media contest will encourage the public to share photos of these illuminated landmarks.
