Modest Exercise Helps Curb Weight Gain After Quitting Smoking

Women who want to quit smoking, are often concerned about the side effect of weight gain. For three years, a large study tracked 4,717 smokers aged between 50 to 70 years old. Results showed that even a little bit of physical activity minimised weight gain, but the best results were seen when women engaged in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week – such as biking, easy swimming, or using an exercise machine. These women gained an average of 2.55 kg, while those who did no exercise or decreased their activity, gained an average of 3.88 kg.

Researchers also found that increasing physical activity had a stronger beneficial association for younger women and obese women (as compared with normal-weight women). However, it is important to note that regardless of age, stopping smoking is beneficial for all women.
