Pregnancy Complications and Heart Disease Risks

According to data published by The BMJ in October last year, pregnancy complications such as miscarriage, pre-eclampsia (increased protein in urine), gestational diabetes mellitus (diabetes in pregnancy) and pre-term delivery are linked to a heightened risk of heart disease later in life.

The researchers found that several factors, including pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, pre-term birth and early menopause, were associated with up to twofold risk of a cardiovascular outcome. In addition, pre-eclampsia was also associated with a fourfold risk of heart failure.

Here’s what you can do to reduce your risk:

  • Work closely with your family doctor/gynae if you have any pregnancy complications, i.e. pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus and pre-term delivery.
  • Understand your risks for heart disease now and as you age.
  • Adopt healthy lifestyle habits – regular exercise, eat a heart-healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight and go for routine check-ups.
