What do AEDs do?
A sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occurs when the heart’s electrical system becomes chaotic, causing the heart to stop pumping blood to the brain and body. When this happens, the person will collapse, lose consciousness, and stop breathing almost immediately. An automated external defibrillator (AED) delivers a controlled electric shock to the heart. This shock is the only effective treatment for SCA, as it can stop the dangerous irregular heart rhythm and allow the heart to restart with a normal rhythm.
Who can use an AED?
Anyone can use an AED. It has been designed for emergencies and is simple enough for a layperson to use. The device has an in-built voice prompt which provides clear, step-by-step instructions on what the user should do.
Outfit your premises with an AED to keep your community safe against cardiac emergencies!
