Mrs Patricia De Souza cardiac journey began over 15 years ago, when her rising cholesterol levels slowly edged her into high-risk territory. By the end of 2022, her blood tests made the situation clear — she required urgent cardiac intervention. Surgery followed, and recovery began.
Her rehabilitation started at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS). There she came across a brochure for the Singapore Heart Foundation’s Heart Wellness Centre (HWC). Initially hesitant about taking on a structured exercise programme, Patricia was encouraged by her doctor and a close friend to give it a try. She did — and it changed the trajectory of her recovery.
“Joining the Heart Wellness Centre @ Gombak has been at the core of my recovery from surgery,” said Patricia, “The environment has supported and guided me these past two years. It is a personal touchstone for me.”
That environment — defined by the dedication of the SHF team and the camaraderie of the clients — offered far more than just physical training. It provided emotional support, clinical overview and a sense of shared purpose. As her husband observed, what differentiates HWC from a typical gym is the care and attentiveness: physiotherapists routinely monitor your blood pressure and the presence of others with similar health experiences builds a space where clients feel understood and encouraged.
Over the course of two years, Patricia’s condition improved steadily. Her strength, stamina and energy levels increased. The visible progress during her regular medical reviews affirmed the value of consistency and proper rehabilitation.
By late 2023 — one-year post-surgery — Patricia took her first nature trail walk at the Quarry Wetland on the Colugo Trail; she was accompanied by her husband. This was no small feat. It was her first trail experience in life. In Apr 2024, to mark their 77th birthdays, the couple climbed to the top of Colugo Deck.
Her transformation didn’t happen by chance. It was the result of steady effort, supported care and a clear mindset. She shares her approach:
“I have a fully functioning heart… what is my body going to do?” she asked herself in the hospital ward in Dec 2022. Today, she knows the answer: adapt, strengthen and move forward.
Her story is a compelling reminder that age and/or prior physical limitations do not define the scope of recovery. With structured support, belief and consistent effort, you are assured that rehabilitation is not just about getting better — but about discovering what is still possible.
