Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society Public Education Forum 2018

In recognition of the increased incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF), the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS) Public Education Forum 2018, organised by the Singapore Heart Foundation and initiated by the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society and Singapore Cardiac Society, took place at Toa Payoh HDB Hub Convention Centre (Auditorium) on 8 Sep 2018 to raise awareness on AF.

AF is one of the most common types of rapid and irregular heart rhythm that affects 1 to 2% of Singaporeans and its incidence is expected to increase with the aging population. In general, AF patients have a stroke risk five times higher than those who do not have AF, and mortality rate of strokes related to AF is twice as high as that of strokes unrelated to AF.

Guest of Honour Mr Edwin Tong, Senior Minister of State for Law and Health, and MP for Marine Parade GRC, graced the event with more than 900 participants in attendance. Conducted in both English and Mandarin, experts weighed in on the conditions and also highlighted the precautionary measures that can prevent the onset of AF. The event concluded with the ‘Ask the Expert’ session, where the panel of guest speakers addressed questions from the floor.
