IS DRINKING ALWAYS SAFE IN MODERATION?
FACT: If you already have a condition that causes abnormal heart rhythm, alcohol may aggravate it. This can be especially dangerous for those who have inherited heart rhythm conditions. When you stop drinking, you will see a rapid improvement in your blood pressure within a few days.
A study published in the European Heart Journal in Jan 2021 showed that just one alcoholic drink a day was linked to a 16% increased risk of atrial fibrillation, when the heart beats in an abnormal and irregular rhythm, over an average follow-up period of nearly 14 years.
In addition, there has not been any research to prove a cause-and-effect relationship between drinking alcohol and better heart health. It is also unclear whether red wine is directly associated with the health benefits seen in some studies or whether other factors are at play. It is therefore recommended not to drink any form of alcohol for their supposed health benefits. Instead, take active steps to lower your cholesterol, control high blood pressure, manage your weight, maintain an active lifestyle, and have a Heart Smart diet.
